My primary hybridizing focus has been on appliques.  I’d especially like to get applique throats onto new petal colors like “true” red and hot pink.  And develop some other new looks for an applique daylily.  To get truly unique breaks along those lines I fully anticipated it to take multiple generations of crosses over quite a few years.  And I am willing to put in the time and effort.

However, fancy edges have always been intriguing to me.  Those frilly, pie-crusted, bubbly, or toothy edges are just too interesting to completely disregard.  So even though I do not have very much room to grow seedlings I have been setting aside a little room for a few crosses each year for this small, secondary focus.  This year the results have greatly exceeded my expectations.  I could be in trouble!  I almost have to follow-up with these promising toothy seedlings, but if I do so they would be taking big bites from my applique focus!  I will need more land to grow seedlings…

Here’s a look at some of my toothy and fancy-edged seedlings seen for the first time this year:

16-85
16-85

The cream/yellow edging is quite nice and is a good color combination with the pink petals and yellow throat.

16-227
16-227

The edge is very tightly frilled/ruffled, and does have a few teeth popping-up here and there also.  Again the edge is a nice color combination with the red-pink petals and yellow throat.

16-198
16-198

Believe it or not 16-198 is a sibling to the previous daylily 16-227.  Just goes to show how different siblings can be!  The ruffling is quite nice, and there is something different about the yellow throat that I like.

16-188
16-188

Similar to 16-227– they both share one parent but have a different second parent.  Some of the teeth on this one really stick out.

16-109
16-109

The orange of the petals isn’t quite as clean as I’d like, but the toothy edges are quite something and it is quite a prolific bloomer.  I might be able to improve this with some strategic crosses…

16-126
16-126

Now here we have clean color.  And the edge has both small razor teeth and some larger rounded teeth.

16-208
16-208

Shares one parent with 16-126.  Again has nice clean color.  The raised “ridges” radiating out from the throat add a nice look and texture.

16-140
16-140

I really like the potential of this one.  The petal coloration needs to be cleaned-up, but the orange-red petal color with the red eye, and the yellow throat with yellow extreme teeth work well together.

16-210
16-210

A sibling to 16-140.  The petal color is a darker red and also needs to be cleaned-up with a follow-up cross.  However the golden-yellow extreme teeth are quite something!

16-295
16-295

Another sibling to 16-240 and 16-210.  Some really funky teeth on this one!  Especially on the tip of the petal on the right.

I was able to make some crosses with many of these this year.  If I can find room to plant the seedlings, with any luck I’ll be able to see the results in two years.  Given how nice many of these are I am quite optimistic!
